On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 1:00 pm officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Independence Street for a suspicious incident. Upon arrival, officers interviewed a witness who stated that while metal detecting in a wooded area, he discovered what appeared to be suspicious bones.  Officers searched the area and found scattered bones that may be of human origin. Detectives from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit, along with members of the Maryland State Police Crime Lab, are currently on the scene collecting evidence and conducting an investigation.

Once evidence collection is complete, the bones will be transported to the Office of the Maryland Chief Medical Examiner for scientific analysis. At this time, the investigation is in its early stages, and no further information is available regarding the origin of the bones or the circumstances surrounding them.
