On Thursday, July 13, 2023 at approximately 12:43 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded a business on N. Centre Street for a well-being check. The caller reported that a male subject was striking his head against the business. Officers located the male at another business and identified him as Joseph Wood. Wood was causing a disturbance and refused to leave the property. He was arrested and later released on two criminal citations pending trial. On Thursday, July 13, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Ashley DeCarlo. The warrant was issued as the result of DeCarlo failing to appear for court on July 13, 2023 to answer for the charges of Assault-2nd Degree and Disorderly Conduct. She was arrested and transported to Central Booking. DeCarlo was later seen by District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $3,000 bond. The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing charges against Chamberlain at the District Court of Allegany County. The Downtown Development Commission held their monthly meeting on Thursday and approved their Fiscal Year 2024 budget. The operating budget is a total of $385,179 with main expenditures in the departments of Payroll and Health Insurance, Administrative charges and almost $82,000 for Entertainment, Marketing and Promotions. Revenues are expected to come from property taxes, ARPA funds and grant money as well as $73,600 from the city of Cumberland’s general fund. At Thursday’s meeting of the Canal Place Authority, much of the discussion centered on the listening session held Wednesday in relation to expanding the boundaries of the Passages of the Potomac Heritage Area to include all of Allegany County. If you weren’t aware, Maryland has an official State Dinosaur – the Astrodon – found in 1887 in Prince Georges County. Now, the bones of another large dino have been uncovered in the same area – belonging to a species 115 million years old. Found in the Laurel Maryland Dinosaur Park, officials suspect the bones belong to a species known as Acro-cantho-saurus. The remains were found in what is called a bone-bed where different species are in the same geologic layer of earth.
