Trone Introduces Legislation To Increase Social Connections
Congressman David Trone has introduced the Improving Measurements for Loneliness and Isolation Act. The act would bring subject matter experts, researchers, and other stakeholders together, unifying efforts to increase social connections. Trone said the Act will address and treat the impact of loneliness on mental and physical health. Rolling Mill Developer Still Has Interest
Officials from the City of Cumberland have met with the developer of the Rolling Mill project. The developer, Kline-Scott-Visco from Frederick has made little progress other than an unfinished shell building and some landscaping. Mayor Ray Morriss says there is still interest on the developer’s part… However, the City is now in a 30-day waiting period for a final decision and the Mayor tells WCBC that using eminent domain with the developer and/or the property hold-outs in the area is possible…
Mariela Roca Running For 6th District Seat
David Trone leaving his District 6 Congressional seat to run for Ben Cardin’s Senate position has invited a large field of candidates. Mariela Roca is a Republican candidate from Frederick who served in the Air Force in Afghanistan, and has worked at Fort Detrick. Harry Morgan Named Allegany College of Maryland’s 2023 Distinguished Alumni
Harry A. Morgan is the fifth recipient of the Allegany College of Maryland Distinguished Alumni Award. He was presented with the award during a reception and tour of the college earlier this year. Morgan is a 33-year member of the advisory council for ACM’s automotive technology program. Morgan is a 1980 graduate of the college’s automotive technology program. He is a certified Master Automotive Technician and Advance Level Diagnostics by the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (1981-present) and was a finalist for the NAPA ASE Technician of the Year in 2002. State Fire Marshal Gains New K-9 Team
A new K9 has joined the office of the State Fire Marshal to help detect the causes of fires in the state. Blondie, a 4-year old Labrador mix, along with handler Master Deputy Oliver Alkire graduated from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives training earlier this month. The 12-week school trains canines to detect a variety of ignitable liquids that could be used to accelerate a fire. Blondie and her handler will be one of six ATF-trained teams in the State of Maryland. Blondie has also worked for Guiding Eyes for the Blind before coming to the State…
Let’s Beautify Cumberland Welcomes Holiday Season
Let’s Beautify Cumberland will celebrated the lighting of the Downtown Christmas tree on Friday with the illumination of the red, white, and blue lights at Veterans Park on South Centre Street. Patriotic tunes and holiday music will be provided by DJ Mark Stevens. Rudolph and Frosty will be available for photos with visitors and hot chocolate and cookies will be available from 6-9pm, provided by LBC members in appreciation for all who have helped to beautify the city.
Maryland’s handgun licensing law struck down by federal appeals court
A federal appeals court Tuesday struck down Maryland’s handgun licensing law, finding that its requirements, which include submitting fingerprints for a background check and taking a four-hour firearms safety course, are unconstitutionally restrictive. In a 2-1 ruling, judges on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond said they considered the case in light of a U.S. Supreme Court decision last year that “effected a sea change in Second Amendment law.” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, said he was disappointed in the circuit court’s ruling and will “continue to fight for this law.” He said his administration is reviewing the ruling…
Maryland Avenue Shoplifting Arrest
On 11/21/2023 at approximately 2:00 PM the Cumberland City Police were dispatched to a business in the 400 block of Maryland Avenue for a shoplifting complaint. Upon arrival officers contacted Matthew Easton and located stolen merchandise on his person. Easton was arrested and transported to the Police Station. Easton was issued a Criminal Citation for theft and released pending trial in District Court. Arrested – Matthew Leon Easton (49) Lonaconing, MD Charge – Theft less than $100.00
Shop Downtown After Tree Lighting
Downtown Cumberland is getting ready for its traditional kickoff to the Christmas season with the Christmas tree lighting on Friday night at Canal Place, beginning at 5pm. Following the tree lighting and arrival of Santa Claus, shoppers can visit several downtown shops that are staying open late to start the holiday season.
