Ordinance Passes To Ban Downtown Smoking

August 9th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

Cumberland’s Mayor and City Council took steps on Monday to make sure the new downtown area stays clean and green. An ordinance passed unanimously that will ban the use in public of both tobacco and cannabis as well as smokeless tobacco within the right of ways of Baltimore Street between Queen City Drive and Mechanic Street. Mayor Ray Morriss said the city wants to emphasize the area’s future as being safe and healthy for families…

"We look at that Baltimore Street in the future of our downtown area is an area in which we want to have have it be a safe family area and by prohibiting smoking you automatically include cannabis as you would tobacco in the past simply because it is legal within the state of Maryland so you have to reiterate that there's no smoking of that either."
