According to Southwest Journal, an online magazine, Ocean City is considered to be the riskiest place to live in Maryland. Checking in at number five on the list is Cumberland. The list notes Cumberland has a population of just fewer than 20,000 and a property crime rate of 781 per 100,000 people. This means there is a 1 in 22 chance of being the victim of property crime. Ocean City’s population of 6,900 has a property crime rate of 1,317 per 100,000 people. Conversely, the magazine cites Ocean Pines, located just 10 miles west of Ocean City as the safest city in the state with a low property crime rate of 5.9 per 100,000. Factors that may contribute to a city’s safety ranking include the quality of its public schools, the median income of its residents, and the availability of recreational and entertainment options.
