Not All Downtown Bricks Being Replaced

November 7th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

If you have been in downtown Cumberland along the new Baltimore Street, you've probably noticed the little strips of blue tape all over the sidewalks. The City of Cumberland conducted an inspection of the project earlier this month and identified bricks that had been chipped or cracked during installation. Cumberland Mayor Ray Morris joining WCBC's Dave Norman program on Tuesday said that the bricks will be replaced by the contractor before the city takes delivery of the project. However, sources have told WCBC news that Triton Construction will not be replacing any additional bricks. WCBC news spoke with Matt Idleman, City Engineer for the project and said that Triton Construction has already replaced 25% of the bricks identified while the other 75% of the bricks will remain in place…

"I know that they're already done. The subcontractor is offsite now that did the brick work so, yes they did do a portion of what we marked about 25% of them."

As part of the state inspection, a portion of the Baltimore Street pedestrian crossing and the Liberty Street pedestrian crossing had to be reworked to bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Mr. Idleman said that a second inspection by the state will be completed in a few weeks…

“They identified a few areas that didn't quite meet the federal standards so they went, they adjusted those. They haven't, we've reached out to reschedule them to come back and they have not given us a date yet but it should be the next couple weeks so, to confirm that we're fully compliant."

Work along Baltimore Street continues to wrap up in preparation for the November 14 ribbon cutting.
