The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Belt Construction, would like to notify the public that North Mechanic Street will continue to be closed from Eutaw Place to Queen City Drive until approximately 5pm, Friday, to allow the contractor to repair a collapsed 18” sewer main. The road will be closed the entire time to allow the sewer flows to be pumped around the construction site.
Smith Street will remain open. Eutaw Place will be converted to one-way traffic flowing from N. Mechanic Street toward N. Centre Street with temporary signage.
All southbound vehicles on North Mechanic Street, except for local traffic, will be detoured over the Henderson Avenue Bridge toward Baltimore Street and Queen City Drive. Local traffic will be permitted to drive on North Mechanic Street until they reach the intersection of Eutaw Place where they will be forced to use Eutaw Place to access North Centre Street.
Additional information will be released in the event the closure needs to be expanded or the duration needs extended.
Residents are advised to avoid the area as much as possible during this time to allow for the work to be completed safely and successfully.
Thank you for your cooperation during this time. Please use caution in the area and follow all traffic control devices that will be in place. If there are any questions, please contact the City of Cumberland Engineering Department, 301-759-6601.
