Maryland Governor Wes Moore attended the second day of the Congressional Black Caucus Town Hall in Washington D.C. where he spoke on working to erase the racial wealth gap in the state. He said efforts – including raising the minimum wage – have seen some success because of collaboration of government and community…
“Because I know all the progress we have made thus far in the state of Maryland is because we had everybody at the table and everybody with a core understanding that we are going to be mission first and people always and we are going to get this done.”
Moore spoke of how racism has cost the country money in gross domestic product over the past twenty years and the importance of changing the economic system…
“This country has lost 16 trillion dollars in GDP over the past two decades because of the racial wealth gap. That’s not GDP of a group; that’s not GDP of a community. Racism is expensive. Bigotry is expensive. And if we truly want to have an economic system that benefits everybody, we need to create an economic system that allows for the racial wealth gap to become history.”
