James Zamagias, a longtime history and political science teacher and Dean of High School Academics at Bishop Walsh, has announced his retirement after 45 years at the Catholic school in Cumberland. Jim has been a member of WCBC's Sports Team for over 30 years and will continue those duties.
Zamagias, a resident of Cumberland, graduated from BW in 1975. After getting his undergraduate from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Zamagias returned to BW as an instructor where he has remained for his entire professional career. He later earned his Master in Education at Frostburg State University. Affectionately known as “Mr. Z” to his students, Zamagias was known for challenging his students during classroom political and social debates, research essays and Advanced Placement courses. His AP students continually scored above the national averages on AP tests. He also served as the head of BW Academic Council, leading the high curriculum and academic standards at the school. During his tenure, Zamagias also acted as advisor to the school state-winning Mock Trial team and was known for his regular classroom and assembly Jeopardy games. An avid sports fan, Zamagias served as BW’s athletic director for years and a coach of Spartan Boys Baseball. He has served on countless school committees, including fundraising events, anniversary celebrations and religious ceremonies. “How can you sum up such a long and impressive career of 45 years?” says Jennifer Flinn, BW Principal and former Zamagias student. “ I know I want to join many others and thanking Jim for his many years of service to our school.”
Tony Orndoff, veteran BW teacher, will be taking over the high school social studies classes. For more information on Bishop Walsh, visit bishopwalsh.org or call 301-724-5360.
