Essentially closed since 2016, there remains no movement on efforts to replace the Washington Street Bridge. While plans and timelines have been established to repair and replace the other two deteriorating West Side bridges on Fayette and Cumberland streets- the Washington Street span is more complicated. In an attempt to force CSX to take action, the Allegany County Board of Commissioners voted in April of 2021 to file a complaint against the company with the National Surface Transportation Board. The county and the city point to the bridge having sustained strikes from CSX trains in 2017 and 2018 that has resulted in it’s permanent closure.
