Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Tiffany Robinson has announced that the state’s unemployment insurance claimants will begin receiving their benefit payments through direct deposit beginning in April 2021. The transition from Bank of America debit cards to direct deposit comes as a result of a new contract with Wells Fargo. Although the hope is that the direct disposit element will make for a smoother process, the department is still being inundated with complaints from jobless Marylanders who are still struggling to access benefits, sometimes waiting weeks or months while their claims were processed. They've also reported serious problems reaching state employees for help, either by phone or over the internet.
