Western Maryland’s counties are now considered to be at mid-point in the fall foliage change. Many trees across the state are changing color earlier than usual this year due to drought with vibrant reds being outdone by more yellow and gold tones. Maryland Forest Service managers encourage residents to leave fallen leaves to act as a natural mulch to help retain much needed soil moisture. As they break down, they add organic matter to the soil and act as a fertilizer.
