On Monday, June 24th, 2024, officers with the Cumberland Police Dept. observed a Volkswagen Jetta operating on Maryland Ave. Officers observed the vehicles operator actively using a cell phone while driving and also observed the vehicle cross the center line. Officers then activated their emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. At that time, the vehicle began to accelerate and failed to stop for officers. The vehicle then continued onto Virginia Ave and officers observed the vehicle crash into a residence in the area of West First St. The driver then exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. A short time later, the driver was able to be located and detained at a residence in the 100 block of Oak St. It was then also learned that the vehicle used in the incident was stolen. As a result, Marley Zaire Powell, 30, was placed under arrest and taken before the District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance. Powell remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on $5,000 bond.
