West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin made his final speech before leaving office in the United States Senate this week in Washington, D.C. Manchin entered the Senate as a Democrat in 2010, winning a special election following the death of Senator Robert Byrd. He looked back on his years a lawmaker, but challenged his fellow Senators to look across party lines in the future…
“Every day, ask yourself, “What have I done for my country today?” What have I done? Not for your party. Not for your donors. For your country. After all, that’s why we’re here. We have got to stop demonizing each other. We’ve got to argue over ideas, that’s fine, but not personalities. George Washington warned us about the dangers of political parties dividing our country over 200 years ago, and we’re living in the world he feared today.”
