Man Charged With Explosive Device After Breaking Into Home

November 14th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

A joint investigation by the Maryland State Police and the Office of the State Fire Marshal has resulted in the arrest of Andrew Ervin Romack, 62, after troopers discovered a suspected improvised explosive device after he trespassed into a Barton home.

Just after 1:00 a.m. on November 11, 2024, troopers responded to the 20300 block of Lower Georges Creek Road after Romack forced his way into his estranged girlfriend's home. Troopers arrested Romack and located possible improvised explosive devices during their search of the property. The Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad was requested.

Bomb Technicians performed diagnostics on the devices and determined it was necessary to perform render-safe procedures on the devices at the scene. Romack was arrested at the scene and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center.

Bomb Technicians later searched the property and Romack's vehicle, and no other explosive materials were located. "The quick recognition of the potential hazard with this device by the responding troopers and their decision to immediately contact us was appropriate in this incident," stated Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray. "This serves as a positive reminder to all members of the public of the National message, "See Something, Say Something."

Romack was charged with manufacturing and possessing a destructive device, trespassing on private property, fourth-degree burglary, reckless endangerment, and possession of an explosive device with intent. Romack is currently being held without bond at Allegany County Detention Center.
