WCBC News has learned of a planned protest over the death of George Floyd which has been scheduled to take place at Cumberland City Hall at 2:00 PM today.
An organizer has asked those in attendance to wear masks, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and to bring signs. While it's not anticipated to become any sort of violent demonstration, such as the ones that have occurred in major cities across the nation, there have also been social media rumblings of a counter protest, which could bring residents with opposing points of view face to face.
WCBC will continue to monitor the situation with the hope that the demonstration remains peaceful. Cumberland Police Chief Chuck Ternent tells us that he has not been contacted by the organizers, but has faith in the citizens of the city that the protest will remain peaceful.

Everyone has an opinion in this matter. Your family and friends already know what your opinion is. Your opinion will not be swayed by others. Attending a mass gathering will possibly bring you into close contact with those of opposing viewpoints. Those in opposition may not always conduct themselves peacefully.
There is no logical reason to purposefully put yourself or others into an illogical situation that could possibly result in violence or property destruction.
Stay home, stay safe. If you need to pray, pray for those who will not.

What happened to Mr Floyd was totally unacceptable and I understand the emotions. However, this is the Floyd’s family business and not ours. The bottom line is you don’t treat another human being in this manner no matter their color or beliefs. Respect each other as God told us to love one another as he loves you.
Stay home don’t add fuel to the fire. The Floyd family has asked for people to stop protesting. Respect their wishes.

The question is WHO IS THE SO CALLED “ORGANIZER”? Are they/do they have the required permit(s) for said “protest”? Are they local residents of this area,or are they the typical trouble making, law breaking, low life SOB’s from down state? Outside agitators should not and will not be tolerated by the real residents of this area. One thing for sure, should the “sh– hit the fan”, our local police and representatives had better take the appropriate actions, or they will be held accountable in the aftermath. It is just too bad that this much effort, on both sides, could not be utilized in the COVID-19 battle.

I’m pretty dense, now what are we protesting about? A man died, it seems from a video that another man could be responsible. The latter has been charged and will stand trial for the death. Is this what is being protested? One was white one was black. Will we protest every time this happens? One was a policeman, one wasn’t, Will we protest every time that happens? More non-police kill than police do, more blacks kill other blacks than police do, again what are the protests about? A terrible thing happened no one is looking the other way and the system is in motion. If you have nothing better to do with your time then so be it. Please don’t act like the idiots that have burnt and plundered in other cities, that really doesn’t change anything except people’s option of the protesters. Just because I don’t understand what is your point you still have that right. Let your actions show what a great country we live in.

> Glad to see you admit to being dense Dave. That is a start. I guess. And you prove it with your post. Try cracking open a history book and read up on some things, starting with slavery. You’re very lucky the pigs don’t hunt & kill you like they hunt down others.

Mark, I asked for an explanation and you go into a rant. I have looked in the history books, slavery ended over 150 years ago. A terrible thing it cost 100’s of thousands of lives to rid ourselves of it but it’s gone. Segregation ended 50 years ago. They were wrongs that were protected by the law and now is illegal. The hunting down of people by “pigs”, the police I assume you are referring to is against the law and if it happens they are prosecuted. I will promise to read more history if you will. Dr. King had success because he pointed out codified injustices not isolated cases. Are they wrong, yes, but it is not the law and those who break the law are prosecuted. You sound like some guy out of the 60’s hello It’s 2020. There will always be hate, injustice and prejudice. Explain to me how burning down your own neighborhoods will cure this? If you think this solves anything then I am wasting my time talking to you. You have a wonderful day in the best country on earth, imperfect but the best, that’s why so many people are trying to get in!!!

> Yea, things are so great now that Blacks and others are STILL murdered every week with impunity. Not to mention ALL the economic VIOLENCE being inflicted on ALL of us. Sure some has changed, but much hasn’t. I’m not the one in the 60′s, you are the one that is closing his eyes to the conditions of 2020. And btw, ‘Merica isn’t near as great as you think. Many nations are advancing far beyond us, but keep swallowing the jingoistic bullshit, as it seems to make you happy!

You are right Mark I am happy. By the way you still haven’t answered any of my questions. The world isn’t out to get you, it may be apathetic to you but that is life. Find your pease in the Lord. >

I think we should again ban face mask. Ever notice all the looters wore a face mask. The organizer probably wants people to wear a face mask because crime will pay this time

This is the reason why a lot have not changed in our country regarding these kind of injustices. “It doesn’t affect you or your family so it’s none of your business”. So it takes one of your family members to die at the hands of injustice for you to realize the obvious racial injustice going on in our system? It takes the death of one of your children or aunts or uncles for you to realize the seriousness of this situation? “ I stay home and do not break the law and I breathe fine, so weird”. Say that to Ahmaud Arbery who was jogging, peacefully, no riots no protesting and no kind of violence what so ever but was murder regardless. Say that to George Floyd who was arrested because of presumption that he forged a signature on a check which he in fact did not do. You can clearly see in the video he was unarmed, defenseless and pleading for his life. While this officer kneeled on his neck for nearly 8 minutes while he begged and screamed for his life. While the other officer stood and said nothing as he witness his partner take a life of an innocent man. Yes burning down neighborhoods and businesses may not be the answer ( the majority of people doing so are white people destroying black owned businesses and using this as an opportunity to trash what as been build off of hard work and dedication ) but what do you suggest be done instead? When you have spoken for years and still no changes. When the people before you fought the same fight but STILL no change. It seems to me the only way to get attention is when indeed people are angry and get violent and this is due to decades of injustice. Hell even peaceful protestors are harmed and violated. You can protest peacefully or violently and there is still an issue. But the main issue is majority of society ignorance and unwillingness to admit that this is a problem and that it’s plain out wrong. This is because the majority are the ones supporting such things. Maybe not physically going out and taking a life but by staying silent and “looking the other way” because it does not personally affect them. Sad. Tragic. Unjust. We need an obvious change in our system. God did not create one human race superior than the other. We are all born the same, have blood pumping through our veins, so why is it only majority of the minority is being killed and murdered in broad daylight?
