Twenty-seven West Virginia high school seniors who have graduated this year have been selected for the fourth cohort of Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars. The students chosen will receive the state’s newest scholarship of up to $10,000 per year for their college education as they prepare to pursue careers as West Virginia teachers. The Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Program is designed to address ongoing teacher shortages in the fields of math, science, special education, and elementary education. Recipients commit to teaching in one of these fields in West Virginia for at least five years after graduation. Locally, Keyser High School graduate Kayley Clauze received a scholarship. She will be attending Shepherd University.
