Come July 1, Maryland drivers are going to be paying more to drive their vehicles. Legislation passed in the last General Assembly increased registration fees and imposed a new surcharge on all-electric and hybrid vehicles.
The increases are an attempt, in part, to bridge the gap between lower highway user funds and needed transportation projects. The increase of electric vehicles on the road has meant less money generated through the state’s gas tax that finances highway projects.
