Several people signed in to speak at the Cumberland Mayor and City Council meeting on Tuesday on the issue of illegal immigrants in the area. One citizen, Kathleen Heinrich, recounted that the mayor was recently on WCBC addressing a question about immigrants – she asked the mayor pointedly if there is a problem locally…
“I’m sure you’ve heard about what’s going on in Springfield, Ohio, across the border in Pennsylvania, the Venezuelan gangs in Colorado. So, I’m asking you if this is an issue here and is it – because I’ve heard, and these could just be rumors, but I’ve heard that busloads of illegal immigrants have come here and are being put up.”
Mayor Ray Morriss was quick to point out that rumors swirl on social media constantly, even that the city’s relocation package was an attempt to bring illegal immigrants to the area, but people never investigate past the innuendo to find the truth…
“This whole thing on illegal immigrants – and I’ll let you all come up and speak; we don’t have an issue. We don’t have an issue at all. And, if there was, then as I said, we would address it and figure out what we could do. But this is all sort of a made up fantasy.”
