Holland Street Assault arrest

On October 4, 2024, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence on Holland Street, Cumberland Maryland for a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival Officers made contact with two subjects that were involved in the altercation. The investigation revealed that Mr. Benson prevented the victim from leaving the residence. As the victim attempted to leave, she was struck with a closed fist on the right side of her head. Officers observed swelling and blood coming from her eye and ear area. The victim was then pushed to the ground and Benson began to strangle her with both hands. The victim stated that Benson then turned her over and started to strangle her by using his forearm/elbow in a headlock. The victim advised officers that she was able to bite Benson to get free of the hold. Officers located the bite mark on Benson, consistent with the victim’s statements. Mr. Benson was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center.

Arrest: Joseph Robert Benson III, age 40, Cumberland Maryland.
Charges: Assault 1st degree, Assault 2nd  degree and False imprisonment.
