In an op-ed published Monday in the Washington Examiner, Maryland Gov. Hogan called on Georgia residents to vote for the two Republican candidates in that state's US Senate run-off elections, which will determine the balance of power in Congress's upper chamber.
Hogan said that as a Republican governor in a blue state, he knows “firsthand how one-party monopoly can wreak terrible consequences,” and went on to ask Georgians if they want a “one-party monopoly in Washington.”
Sen. Kelly Loeffler was appointed last December to fill a vacant Senate seat, and has faced backlash over stock transactions she and her husband made, following a Senate briefing on the coronavirus before the global stock market crash. She is facing Democrat Reverend Raphael Warnock in the runoff on January 5.
Incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue, who was first elected to the Senate in 2014, heads into the runoff against Democrat Jon Ossoff, after not receiving more than 50% of the vote.
Following the general election earlier this month, 50 Republicans and 48 Democrats were declared winners. If both Ossoff and Warnock win their runoff races, that would bring the Senate to a 50-50 split, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote.
