With one case of pertussis or whooping cough confirmed in the county and three more presumed cases, the Allegany County Health Department is continuing to do contact tracing of individuals and offering testing to those that are symptomatic. Pertussis is spread by respiratory droplets. Simple precautions to prevent spread include hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes and wearing a mask if desired. Pertussis vaccines are the best way to protect against whooping cough. For more information, visit cdc.gov/pertussis.
