Algae that could be harmful to pets if ingested has spread in the Potomac River, officials said. In July, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said that algae mats had been detected in the Potomac River. Initially, DNR reported that the mats were in the area from below Williamsport to Riley’s Lock. On Tuesday, Aug. 20, officials said that the algae mats had also been detected near Cumberland in Allegany County. DNR said that pet owners should keep animals out of the water. If the mats — which look like “fine, green cotton” — are ingested, they can be harmful to animals. DNR said that the algae mats can be seen along river shorelines. The algae will attach itself to rocks or plants on the river’s bottom or float downstream.
