Similar to a “gap year” that students often take in European countries, Governor Wes Moore has signed into law the SERVE ACT – an opportunity for students graduating from high school to have a service year in the state for a non-profit organization. High school grads must be apply to the program and can do so up to 3 years following graduation. The Governor signed the bill into law on Monday.
Students in the program will be assigned sites, mentors, be paid $15 per hour and upon completion of the service year will receive $6,000 for college. The program reflects the governor’s desire to be known as the “service governor.”
