Gas Prices Hold Steady in Cumberland

June 5th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Gas averages in Maryland have stayed within a penny of the price drivers were paying on Memorial Day. In its latest weekly report, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) released new gas demand data that shows demand dropped while total domestic gas stocks increased last week. The demand decrease and supply increase has helped to stabilize pump prices and will likely help prices remain stable through the weekend and into summer.

Today’s national gas price average is $3.04, unchanged from one week ago, up respectively 13 cents from one month ago and $1.05 from one year ago.

The gas price average in Maryland today is $3.01, down a penny from last week, up respectively 18 cents in the last month, and 99 cents from this date last year.

Maryland’s statewide average hit $3.01 on May 13 and has remained above $3 since that date, but today’s statewide average is now even with the average on May 13. Most areas in Maryland are averaging under $3 this week.

Maryland drivers saw another week with gas price average increases as high crude prices and growing refinery utilization — which increased from 69 to 76 percent last week according to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) — helped to push prices higher. However, increased gasoline stocks and a decrease in demand have helped to slow the rate at which prices have increased. Gas prices are likely to continue to increase in the coming days, but if these trends continue, prices will increase at a slower rate than Americans have seen since the beginning of the month.

The gas price average in Maryland today is $2.84, up respectively four cents from last week, 21 cents in the last month, and 65 cents from this date last year. Most areas in Maryland saw only a penny or two increase from last week.

Today’s national gas price average is $2.88, up respectively five cents in the last week, 28 cents in the last month, and 69 cents from this time last year.

The national gas average has not hit $3 since October 31, 2014. The next closest date was in May 25, 2018 at $2.96. Maryland’s gas average has not hit $3 since October 26, 2014.
