The future of St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown is in question after the Archdiocese of Baltimore announced Thursday it could no longer provide funding to the school. The archdiocese has provided funding of 8.5 million dollars the last five years. Enrollment at Goretti has declined 33% over the past five years. The school incurred expenses when it moved classrooms to a second location in Hagerstown while still maintaining athletic facilities at its original site. An exploratory committee will determine if the school can remain open next year as an independent Catholic school.
