FSU’s Red Rocket League eSports Team Undefeated Again

December 7th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

Frostburg State University’s Red Rocket League eSports team recently recorded back-to-back divisional championships, this time defeating Babson College in the grand final. FSU Red has only lost one series and is currently on an 18 series win streak, winning 58 of their 74 games during that stretch.

The FSU Red Rocket League team includes team captain John Lutzteam (JLutz), Thomas Rafferty (Miilynx) and new member Aom Bauman (Aommelett). In the group stage, where they played six matches against other colleges in best of 5s, FSU Red swept each of their first three opponents 3-0 in and then won all their other group stage matches, two of which went to a decisive game 5. FSU Red finished the group stage in first place with a 6-0 series record, only losing 5 out of 23 games played.

During the playoffs, the matches changed to a best of seven. In the quarterfinals, FSU Red took on the fourth-place team from the other divisional group, Hesston College, that they swept 4-0, outscoring them 23 goals to 7. FSU Red then moved onto the semifinals, where they faced Kent State University. FSU Red played their best series of the year, winning in another 4-0 sweep, and advancing to the championship.

Heading into the divisional grand final, FSU Red met another familiar opponent – Babson College. FSU Red won the first three games of the best of 7 to lead 3-0. The next two games would be Babson’s, leaving the series 3-2 in favor of FSU. In game 6, FSU equalized the game 1-1 with two minutes left. Miilynx and Aommelett found an opportunity to pinch the ball at 100 mph straight into the Babson net with just over 90 seconds to play. FSU scored two more goals to win their second divisional championship in as many semesters.

“I’m graduating this semester, so we wanted to end on a high note with a second title,” said FSU Red’s team captain John Lutz. “I’m just so proud of the boys for getting the job done. I thought it was funny that they were probably seeking the same revenge arc as we did last semester, but we were not going to let that play out for Babson.” Lutz was referring to redeeming their only series loss in last semester’s grand final.
