Every year the Upward Bound Program at Frostburg State University recognizes students who excel in the classroom as well as in the residence hall during its five-week Summer Residential Program during which students live on campus while attending summer enrichment classes and participating in various activities and field trips. This year’s distinguished students are Samantha Blubaugh, Melinda Turner and Makaylyn Whetzel, all from Mountain Ridge High School.
These are well-rounded individuals who staff members feel represent the Upward Bound Program well, individuals who care about and are considerate of others as well as themselves. These students also exemplify the Upward Bound spirit of friendship, cooperation, respect, support for one another, honesty, dedication and learning.
This summer, more than 30 students were welcomed to campus for the first time since 2019. This year the students enjoyed trips to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Toby’s Dinner Theatre in Columbia, Md., and explored sights and sounds in Nashville, Tenn. Sen. Ben Cardin also visited during the program to award a check for the first year of the new grant cycle.
FSU’s Upward Bound Program is a federally funded pre-college program designed to assist and motivate qualified Allegany County students as they advance through high school toward college enrollment. This free year-round program can help students determine what classes to take while in high school and help them understand what colleges look for in prospective students. It does this through an academic year program as well as an optional, but intensive, three- or five-week summer residential program. Both take place on FSU’s campus.
With more than 35 years of experience, Upward Bound helps students prepare for the SATs and other college-prep tests, fill out financial aid applications, meet deadlines, visit college campuses and much more.
Upward Bound is accepting applications for new students. For more information about the program or to apply, contact the Upward Bound Office at 301-687-4994 or email esteele@frostburg.edu.
