One of the top scholastic athletes in Cumberland history has died at the age of 97. Bob Stakem passed away Sunday at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehab Center. Stakem was a graduate of LaSalle High School where he won the Rapplier Award as the top male student-athlete. He captained the WVU Mountaineers basketball team that competed in the NIT in New York City in 1945. Stakem was one of the first people to be inducted into the Western Maryland Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame. Visitation at Scarpelli Funeral Home on Virginia Avenue will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday with funeral services at Saints Peter and Paul Friday at 11 a.m.
