On 10/21/2022 at approximately 1303 hours, Garrett County 911 Center received a call reporting a motor vehicle accident at RT. 219 at Rock Lodge Road, McHenry, Maryland, involving a SUV and a motorcycle. Troopers from the McHenry Barrack responded to the scene and learned that Vehicle #1 identified as 2022 Indian Scout motorcycle was traveling S/B RT. 219 at Rock Lodge Road. Vehicle #2 identified as a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox was stopped S/B RT. 219 at Rock Lodge Road, attempting to turn left onto Rock Lodge Road. Subsequently, vehicle #1 struck the rear of vehicle #2 causing the driver to be ejected. The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Luray Ausherman, 89 years old, from Hagerstown, Maryland. It should be noted that the driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, but the helmet flew off, when he was ejected. Ausherman sustained life threatening injuries and was flown by Trooper 5 to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia where he later succumbed to injuries from the collision.
Vehicle #2 was operated by Domenico Cicala Jr, 66 years old and was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Cicala Jr did not sustain any injuries and refused medical treatment.
The Maryland State Police was assisted by the Maryland State Highway Administration and Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
