The NCAA has some encouraging numbers for its Emerging Sports for Women program following research completed during the 2023-24 academic year. Emerging sports accounted for over 5,000 participation opportunities for women, an increase of over 30% from 2022. Frostburg State University currently sponsors three of the six sports within the program – Acrobatics and Tumbling, Women’s Rugby, and Women’s Wrestling. A sport must have more than 40 schools sponsor it at the varsity level and meet certain requirements to become a NCAA Championship sport.
