Having served in Maryland’s General Assembly since 1983, the workings and day-to-day operation of the annual legislative sessions had become second nature for State Senator George Edwards — until this year. When the 2021 session of the Maryland General Assembly got underway last month, it was done so with a number of changes made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many proceedings have moved online to allow for social distancing, and the look inside the chamber is markedly different with glass barriers towering over lawmakers and new safety protocols.
