On Friday morning, the Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 600 block of Hilltop Dr for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, Officers made contact with a female victim. She alleged that she came to the residence and discovered she was locked out of the home and that her belongings had been thrown into the yard. The victim advised they attempted to enter the home at which time the suspect began to throw items at her, causing injuries to her arm. The suspect was identified as Michael Emerson Resh, 31, of Cumberland MD. The victim stated Resh had left the residence in a vehicle prior to officer’s arrival on scene. The vehicle and Resh were located shortly afterwards and he was taken into custody without incident. Resh was charged with 2nd Degree Assault. Resh was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his initial appearance where he was released on his own recognizance.

On Sunday, July 26, 2020, at 7:19 pm, officers from the Cumberland Police Department were dispatched to the 300 block of Grand Avenue for an assault complaint. Upon arrival officers began investigating the complaint. They learned that Robert Whitacker III, age 30 of Cumberland, and the victim had been arguing over the course of a couple days. Officers further learned that during the argument Whitacker assaulted the victim multiple times. At the conclusion of the investigation, Whitacker was arrested and charged with assault second degree and reckless endangerment. Whitacker was later provided his Initial Appearance in District Court and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.
