The subject of tax differential has always been a tricky one between the city of Cumberland and Allegany County. The differential is a rebate on property taxes town residents pay the county for services like emergency management; libraries; the health department and animal control. What that rebate should be has been subject to some heated debates over the years – at one point leading the two sides into court with the city claiming the county collects an excessive amount of real property tax revenue from municipal residents.
