March 9th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Today marks a significant milestone for Allegany College of Maryland's baseball program as Coach Mason Heyne celebrated his 100th win. The Trojans swept the College of Southern Maryland at home at Steve Bazarnic Field, adding another memorable chapter to Heyne's tenure. This victory is particularly special as it comes in Heyne's fifth full season as head coach, following his interim year in 2021.

Coach Mason Heyne has been instrumental in leading the Trojans to success since taking over the program. In his first full season, he guided the team to a Region 20 playoff berth with a 27-19 record. The following years saw consistent performance, with the Trojans achieving a 28-21 record in 2023 and a 28-23 record in 2024, both leading to Region 20 playoff appearances. Heyne's leadership and dedication have been pivotal in maintaining the team's competitive edge.

Before joining Allegany College of Maryland, Heyne was the head coach at NCAA Division II Davis and Elkins College for five years. His tenure there was marked by numerous accolades, including All-Freshman and All-Conference honors for players like Johnny Liu and Derek Sicca in 2017, and multiple all-conference recognitions in subsequent years. Heyne's coaching prowess was further demonstrated during his summer stint with the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, where three of his players were drafted in the 2022 Major League Baseball draft.

Steve Bazarnic, the previous ball coach, left an indelible mark on Allegany College of Maryland's baseball program. Bazarnic dedicated 48 years to collegiate baseball, leading the Trojans to over 1,400 wins, nine district championships, and nine NJCAA World Series appearances. His coaching career produced 54 draft picks or free agent signees, including notable MLB players like John Kruk and Stan Belinda. Bazarnic's legacy is honored through the naming of Steve Bazarnic Field, where today's victory took place.

Looking ahead, the Trojans have an exciting 2025 schedule lined up, with key matchups against Garrett College and WVU Potomac State, promising thrilling games due to their fierce rivalry. Coach Heyne expressed his pride and optimism for the season, stating, "I am super proud of each team I have been lucky enough to be a part of – this year to see our guys get into the swing of things pretty early and look to create something special is what it's all about each season. It's the athletes that make each season for me and they are due all the credit and will be at our next milestone." With such a promising start, the Trojans are poised for another successful season under Heyne's guidance.
