The City of Cumberland, the Downtown Development Commission (DDC) and the Parks and Recreation Department extend an invitation for the 18th annual Groundhog Day Celebration at City Hall Plaza on Monday, February 3rd . Cumberland’s prognosticator mascot, Queen City Charlie, will be on the steps of City Hall to help answer the question, “Will it be an early spring or six more weeks of winter?”
On hand to interpret the prediction will be Mayor Raymond Morriss and members of Cumberland City Council. The program will begin at 7 am with Mayor Morriss announcing the coloring contest winners, reading the Proclamation, and welcoming our mascot who will be making an appearance near sunrise at 7:22 am.
Attendees can enjoy coffee and hot chocolate compliments of Café Mark, as well as special Groundhog-themed cookies from M&M Bake Shop. WCBC Radio will be livestreaming the event on their Facebook page. Our coloring contest winners will be recognized and presented with their prizes. All That to Go at 52 N. Mechanic Street will offer a free dessert if we get an early spring or a free drink for six more weeks of winter, with a purchase. Cuttz of Encouragement at 70 Pershing Street is offering $5 off a haircut during the month of February—let them know you attended the celebration. The Allegany County Library has joined in the fun by offering recordings of Groundhog stories and a virtual bookshelf of Groundhog Day children’s books with links to check them out from the library.
