City Council Passes Ordinance to Protect Historic Landmark

October 2nd, 2024 by WCBC Radio

At last night’s Cumberland Mayor and City Council public meeting, the council passed the ordinance that prohibits food and beverages at the Riverside Parklet to protect the historic landmark George Washington’s Headquarters.  Prior to passing it, six local citizens expressed their concern regarding how this change will affect meeting the needs of the homeless.  Councilwoman Laurie Marchini said this decision has not been made lightly and that prohibiting the consumption of food and drink is to preserve the historic landmark…

“We’re not saying you can’t eat in any park.  We’re saying that what has happened at George Washington’s Cabin discourages people from seeing it, both Cumberland citizens, Maryland citizens, and buses of people who come in particularly to see that.  It’s an iconic property.  It’s a part of our history.  It’s a part of who we are, and we want to protect that.”
