Cancer Mortality Rates Remain Steady In Area

Director of the UPMC Western Maryland Center for Breast Care, Dr. Blanche Mavromatis, spoke to WCBC regarding statistics for cancer mortality across the state. Mavromatis said although there has been a decrease in cancer mortality over the last 30 years of almost 50%, incidents of new cancer has increased…

“The cancer mortality is decreasing markedly since 1989, about a 44% decrease. But for some reason there seems to be a slight increase in incidents, about 1% annually, and that’s concerning as the incidents also for women less than age 50 in also increasing slightly.”

Mavromatis said while some counties across the state show an increase in incidents over the 1989 to 2021 period of time, Allegany County statistics have remained stable…

“I was able to look at our statistics in Allegany County and for our county the statistics incidents have stayed the same for this period of time and we’re looking at between 1989 and 2021. But they are increasing for example, in the Baltimore County and Washington County as well.”
