Canal Place Proud To Be Self-Sustaining

August 8th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

One of the advantages of Canal Place when it was first set up in 1993 was that it would be run as a self-sustaining entity.  Now, over thirty years later, it is the model for other heritage areas in the state. Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority Director DeDe Richie tells WCBC News that being able to fend for itself is a major advantage, especially when other area are having financial issues…

"We are sustainable heritage area we don't require like the other heritage areas they solicit donations to function they ask for monetary hands out from you know cities and counties that they're in we were set up not to be a burden to the taxpayer of Allegany County and to only do good things with grant money and sustain our selves."

Another advantage is the ability for Canal Place to support non-profits in the area with funding for their projects through mini-grants…

"Mini-grants to non-profits they're no much many grants provide them with money for festivals and non-capital grants for them to do signage and marketing and  promotion for heritage tourism related projects and bring more money into the county for capital projects."
