Budget Shortfall Creates Long-Term Problems

It isn’t all doom and gloom, but the deficit that the State of Maryland is facing is a serious one.  At the Western Maryland Annapolis Delegation’s recent legislative preview, there was a recurring theme of having to be frugal and tightening the belt on spending.  Senator Mike McKay shared that the deficit issue is not new, but the state is not close to being in the black in the coming years…

   

“So just remember that this is the greatest shortfall budget that we’ve had since the great recession in year 2000.  And unfortunately, 84% – 84% of our forecasted revenue will cover the expenses that Maryland has already committed to.”
