With the Rocky Gap Casino Resort taking a pass on a sportsbook operation- the city of Cumberland is hoping that some local businesses will consider taking a shot. Meanwhile, Maryland’s House Minority Leader continues to meet with Rocky Gap representatives operators about pursuing sports gaming. The Rocky Gap Casino has had a greenlight to apply for a retail sportsbook license but has indicated to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency it won’t be applying. In May, the Cumberland Mayor and City Council made a move to encourage a sportsbook in town by voting to adopt zoning guidelines that would allow sports gambling within the city limits. Delegate Jason Buckel tells WCBC News that Rocky Gap’s casino is not on a level playing field with the state’s other gambling facilities in terms of costs and revenues for a sportsbook operation. He plans to push for legislation that would help create a more fair environment for Rocky Gap..
