Reports surfaced in January that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other top Republicans had stepped up a personal campaign to persuade Maryland Governor Larry Hogan to run for the Senate and help the party’s chances of regaining control of the chamber. It turns out Hogan was not the only one being recruited by the RNC. In the weeks leading up to the filing deadline, Delegate Jason Buckel, who represents Allegany County, was lobbied by state and national Republicans to pursue Maryland’s Sixth District Congressional seat. The seat is currently held by Democrat David Trone and polls indicate his likely challenger in November will be Delegate Neal Parrott of Washington County who ran and lost to Trone two years ago. The revised congressional map in Maryland has made Trone’s seat somewhat more vulnerable.
