Allegany County and the Bel Air community continue to work on solutions to renovate the closed Bel Air Elementary School pedestrian bridge, but the scope of the project and funding needed is holding them back. The bridge allows some students to walk to school instead of being bused. State Senator Mike McKay said what started as a small project has turned into a much larger one due to regulations that need to be met to receive federal funding…
“All parties involved are trying to do the best they can to make it happen, but unfortunately the funding that the county, as my understanding, has gone after, has dried up. There’s kind of some of what I call silly regulations, making the bridge larger than it needs to be. Hopefully we’ll be able to figure out some way to just replace the bridge and not with all these federal and state requirements that we were requesting off of the county and the state.”
