Investigators with the Cumberland Fire Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal are asking for assistance in identifying a suspect who set a local tire shop on fire. Investigators obtained video surveillance footage of the suspect, who ignited a flammable device on a window air conditioning unit early Saturday morning at D&K Tires on Greene Street.
After a passerby discovered the fire at around 4:42 a.m., the Cumberland Fire Department and surrounding departments responded to the two-bay auto repair store at 638 Greene Street. Firefighters arrived and discovered fire coming from a window. They were able to contain the fire to an office area, with extensive smoke, soot, and water damage throughout the business. It is estimated the fire caused around $50,000 in damages.
Surveillance footage captured the suspect walking down Greene Street from the Dollar General area around 4:30 a.m. to the side of D&K Tires. The suspect then stopped and ignited a flammable device on top of the air conditioning unit, slowly walking away towards Greene Street and out of view of the surveillance camera.
Investigators believe the suspect is a white male, approximately 5'8", with a large build. The suspect appears to be wearing loose-fitting pants, possibly sweatpants, and a flannel shirt. Investigators noted that the suspect had a hobbling gait, walking unevenly or with a limp. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Western Regional Office at 301-766-3888 or 301-729-5540.
The video of the suspect can viewed on the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal media pages.
