Maryland’s Catholic churches are being told that bankruptcy may be the only answer for ministry to survive the clergy abuse scandal. October 1 is the date that lawsuits can be filed against the Archdiocese of Baltimore for sexual abuse claims and several are already awaiting the go-date while law firms are encouraging other victims to come forward through advertising across the state. If the Archdiocese would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a limit could be put on claim amounts. Opponents of the possible bankruptcy filing say it goes against the point of the Child Victims Act that enabled the suits to come forward.
