Allegany College of Maryland will soon start to look different as solar energy comes to the campus. With the recent award of $414,000 from the Maryland Energy Administration in addition to previous money received, plans can go ahead for adding solar panels and other photovoltaic systems. Solar panels will be installed on the roof of the Allied Health building, but visitors will also see energy generating additions to parking areas…
“Solar-powered parking canopies with EV chargers will be constructed. And that’s really great because not only can you park under the solar canopies which can be great, with us living here in Western Maryland and you never know when snow is going to happen or rain, you can also, if you have an EV vehicle, you can charge it.”

The campus of Allegany College of Maryland may start to take on a different look as construction of a microgrid for the campus begins to take shape. The microgrid will help to facilitate a new, clean-energy ecosystem that will also lead to a suite of certifications, courses, and degree programs at the college. Solar panels across the campus will be part of the microgrid, according to ACM Spokesperson Kristin Kehrwald…
“We will have ground-mounted, most likely, solar panels. We may have some roof-mounted solar panels. There’s also the idea that we may have something that are like parking canopies that are solar panels as well so those can be – they basically take your current parking lot and retrofit it.”
