West Virginia Congressman Pushes for Another Federal Holiday

U.S. Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., wants to add a new holiday to the calendar.  The freshman congressman has joined Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., in an effort to make Easter Monday, the Monday directly following Easter Sunday, a federal holiday.  If the bill becomes law, Easter Monday would be the 12th annual holiday recognized by the federal government, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The others are: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  

Southern Girls Basketball Team Disciplined

Garrett County Public Schools issued a statement regarding the highly successful girls basketball team at Southern.  The statement follows:  It has come to the attention of GCPS that the Southern High School (SHS) Lady Rams basketball team was in violation of a local policy concerning practicing during the 2024-25 school year. As a result of this violation, appropriate disciplinary action has been imposed. It is important to clarify that this was a violation of county policy and not an MPSSAA violation. Since this is a personnel matter, no further information will be made available.

TRESPASSING ARREST

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at approximately 7:00 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 1600 block of E. Oldtown Rd. for a trespassing complaint.  Police arrived on scene and observed the suspects running from the scene.  Officers contacted the suspects and identified one of them as Heidi Townsend.  Townsend was uncooperative with the officers.  Police contacted the owner of the business who reported that she had to ask Townsend numerous times to leave the property.  Townsend then became argumentative with the owner and caused a disturbance. Distracted Driver Awareness

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month. More than 3,000 people every year across the country lose their lives in what are reported as distracted driving crashes. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Christopher Platter.  The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing charges against Platter at the District Court of Allegany County.  Platter signed for his copy of the summons and he was released pending trial. Grants Support Tree Planting

The Maryland Department of Transportation has awarded more than $26,000 in state funding to support tree plantings across the state. Allegany County will be part of the program with 111 trees coming to Mountain Ridge High School in Frostburg. Those trees will be planted in the area of the stadium. Another 81 trees were rewarded that will be planted at the Frostburg Dog Park on Willow Drive.

DUI & ASSAULT ARREST

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at approximately 10:29 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 1500 block of E. Oldtown Rd. for the report of a vehicle striking multiple parked vehicles and attempting to leave.  Police arrived and contacted the operator who was later identified as Dawn Fishel.  Officers observed that Fishel had struck two other vehicles with her vehicle.  Fishel was uncooperative with officers and refused to get out of her car after being requested to do so by police.  Fishel then assaulted one of the officers as he attempted to remove her from the car. …

CDS ARREST

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at approximately 3:50 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Henderson Avenue and identified the operator as Michael Butler.  A police K-9 was utilized and alerted to the odor of drugs in the vehicle.  A search was conducted and Butler was found to be in possession of suspected drug paraphernalia.  Butler was issued a criminal citation and later released pending trial. City Easter Egg Hunt Moved To New Location

The Cumberland Parks and Recreation annual Easter Egg Hunt has a new location this year.  The event is scheduled to take place at 1pm on Friday at the Mason Sports Complex at the end of Offutt Street in South Cumberland. The location was moved to allow for better access and parking for families attending the event.
