WCBC Sports Announces Top Stories of 2024

There were plenty of local sports stories in the calendar year 2024. As the year winds down, WCBC Sports looks back at the 12 stories that captivated local sports:
 

FRANKFORT FALCONS COMPLETE UNDEFEATED SEASON, WIN 1ST STATE TITLE:  For the first time in school history, Frankfort finishes 14-0 and hoists a WV AA State Championship. The Falcons’ had been reinstated to WV AA on a second appeal in August after being reclassified to AAA in the spring.

FORT HILL VACATES 5 WINS – COMPLETES SECOND 4-PEAT:  After an ineligible player leads to a forfeiture of 5 games during Homecoming week, Fort Hill takes it on the road in the playoffs en route to an 11th state championship – their fourth in a row under Head Coach Zack Alkire.

ALLEGANY SOFTBALL WINS STATE TITLE:  Behind a total team effort including Abi Britton’s 14K on the mound, Allegany defeats Boonsboro 9-1 for another state championship. Several players will continue their careers at the next level, with Britton earning a full scholarship to Penn State.

ACM MBB WINS DISTRICT TITLE – RETURNS TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENT:  For the second time under Head Coach Tommie Reams, Allegany College defeats Monroe in District Title, punching their ticket to the National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.

DANIEL DIEHL COMPETES FOR PARIS OLYMPICS:  The Allegany High School grad and NC State standout competed in the Paris Olympic Trials, making it to the 200M Finals.

JABRIL DANIELS BREAKS TD RECORD:  In a career than spanned 3 seasons, Daniels finished with 80 TDS, passing Josh Page’s mark of 71 in 1996. He scored 33 TD in 2024, adding 2,276 yards. Daniels finishes his career with 4,694yds, and was named Area Player of the Year.

TY JOHNSON PASSES 1,000 YDS CAREER MARK, SCORING SEVERAL TDS THIS SEASON: The NFL journeyman has found a great home in Buffalo, coined “the best 3rd down back in the league” by QB Josh Allen. Johnson has scored 4 TD this year, and has eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in his NFL career.

FRANKFORT WINS STATE BASEBALL TITLE: Shutting out Independence 8-0 in the title game, Falcons win their first baseball championship since 1988.

AVERY MILLER CONTINUES TO IMPRESS IN TRACK & FIELD – EARNS FULL SCHOLARSHIP TO PENN STATE:  The omnipotent athlete, who passed 1,000 points in basketball, was a softball standout, and former offensive soccer player of the year, won a National Heptathlon Championship in Philadelphia. Miller committed to Penn State, earning a full scholarship for track and field.

NORTHERN MAKES FIRST FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:  In what many believe to be the swan song of Coach Phil Carr’s football coaching career, the Huskies go on a run, punching their ticket to Annapolis. In the 4th straight Western Maryland final, Northern held Fort Hill to 7 points in the first half- finishing runner-up in a great season.

ABBY BEEMAN NAMED SUN BELT PLAYER OF THE YEAR:  In her final season at Marshall, Beeman led the Herd to a national tournament berth, as well as a Sun Belt regular season title.

WVSSAC POSTPONES FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS:  After several injunctions relating to playoff standings and reclassification, WVSSAC postpones the first round of the playoffs in all classifications.
