The Maryland State Highway Administration recognizes Crash Responder Safety Week each year. Spokesperson Charlie Gischlar talked with WCBC, saying drivers are most likely to come upon an incident and don’t realize how many calls the state and other responders answered in the last year…
“In 2023, responders – not only us at State Highways, but like police, fire, tow truck operators, responded to over 110,000 crashes in the state of Maryland.”
Gischlar says it is a state law that motorists be attentive to first responders on the highways at all times…
“When you approach flashing lights at an incident scene – now an incident could be a crash, it could be debris removal, it could be a mobile operation of some type, or a fire – you know, a fire department responding to an incident. If they’re on the side of the road with their lights on, state law says that you have to move over or slow down if you can’t safely move over.”
