Susquehanna Bank and AES Warrior Run are the sponsors for
the annual WCBC/Chamber of Commerce Student Salute Scholarship awards to
Frostburg State University. Kathy Getty, managing director of Susquehanna
talked about why the bank chose to get involved with the program…
Three Allegany County Public School students were recently selected as this
year’s recipients of the annual WCBC High School Student Salute program
scholarships. Cady Kirkwood of Mountain Ridge High School will receive a $5,000
one-year scholarship, to be used for tuition, at Frostburg State University for
the 2010-2011 academic year, and Benjamin Brown of Fort Hill High School and
Amber Beckman of Allegany High School are the recipients of $500 scholarships to
FSU for the upcoming year.
The Allegany County Student Salute program is a
collaborative effort to recognize high school seniors who excel in the
classroom. Through the program, those students identified as exceptional
academic achievers, based on grade point average, school and community
leaders,
and who intend to enroll in Frostburg State University, earn the
opportunity to
qualify for scholarships.
Cady Kirkwood is enrolled in a number of AP and
Honors
courses at Mountain Ridge. She is also a member of the debate team,
co-captain of
the mock trial team, member of the jazz band, senior class
vice-president for
student council, co-president of the French Club, and a member of the
National
Honor Society. Cady also enjoys karate and giving piano lessons as well
as
volunteering her time within her community at various fundraisers and
events.
She plans to attend FSU and hopes to pursue a career as a physician or
an
attorney.
Benjamin Brown and Amber Beckman are also enrolled
in
numerous AP and Honors courses at their respective high schools,
participate in
a variety of extracurricular activities, and hold various leadership
positions.
Benjamin is a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 9 as a junior
assistant
scout master as well as a member of Fort Hill’s varsity soccer team and
the National
Honor Society. He plans to major in biology and environmental planning
and
analysis at FSU. Amber is the vice-president of the National Honor
Society, the
captain of the varsity volleyball team and is a member of the French
Club. She
plans to major in psychology and minor in business at FSU.
The Allegany County Board of Education distributes
and
collects applications for the scholarships, which are converted into
“on-air”
salutes which run weekly on WCBC radio station. The Allegany County
Chamber of
Commerce Education Committee reviews all applications and selects the
FSU
scholarship recipients. All three students were recognized at the June
business
meeting of the Allegany County Board of Education.
The program was begun through the efforts of WCBC’s
owner,
David Aydelotte, in 1991, as the station celebrated its 15th
anniversary and was finding ways to “give back” to the community.
